Charles and Ray Eames

"Design is the appropriate combination of materials in order to solve a problem."

Charles Eames (1907-1978) and his Wife, Ray (1912-1988) , formed a partner ship after their marriage in 1941 and always shared credit for their design projects, The Eames studio designed not only furniture but also the machinery and production methods needed to manufacture it.

This Art History post features Lucienne Day - a designer suggested by A Little Birdie Told Me.

Lucienne Day
Born in 1917 in England and was one of the more significant Britich Textile Desiners in the post-scond world war period. She was married to famous funiture designer Robin Day and became a famous design couple and were compared to Charles and Ray Eames, Amercian desingers for the same period.

For my second email in my Art History posts is Charles Rennie Macintosh, a long time favourite of mine, as i love the whole Art Nouveau Period.

I do have to say it is a bit black and white and dull compared to the last post but i had to posty about him coz i Lurrrve him :-) and i want to cover a range of periods and desingers in my lttle quest to broaden everyones art knowledge !

"Combining a progressive modernity with the spirit of romanticism, the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) created many of the best loved and most influential buildings, furniture and decorative schemes of the early 20th century." Quote from here.

I love Charles Rennie Macintosh because of the ways he combines organic flowing lines with more geometric shapes. My favourite part of his designs is the famous rose motif.

I have a real interest in Art History, and past designers. So i thought i would start doing a few posts every now and then about different designers. It will force me to broaden my horizons ( and hopefully yours!) and maybe give me some inspirations.

Finnish Gifts Sell their fabric (oooooo!!) along with a range of bags and gifts. Image buying a big piece of their fabric and making into into a wall hanging!

The Marimekko website has heaps of stuff and a store location finder, there are some stores in Australia that stock Marimekko, including Make Designed Gifts store in Melbourne.
