Meet My Blinder Hemmer Foot

Previous Meet My Feet Posts
Mr Hemmer Foot and Mr Shell Hemmer Foot

Meet Mr Blind Hemmer Foot

The foot sitting on the edge of the fold.

This photo doesn't show very well so here is a diagram i made earlier! (probably even more confusing)...

The instructions suggest to zig zig your edge before you start (which i have not done). Then you place the foot, on the fabric, with the metal strip on the edge of the crease.

My sewing machine had to be changed to one of it's special stitches that looks like this.

The foot essentially sits in the perfect spot for those little zigszags to just catch the edge of the folded fabric.

This is how it looks as it is coming out.

The wrong side after pressing.

And most importantly the right side after pressing.

The foot is perfect for hemming when you just want small little stitches to show through om the right side. (Perfect for a skirt i am going to make tonight to wear to my first Brown Owls meeting on Sunday!)

If you were good at fiddly things i think you could achieve the same effect without a special foot - just press you fabric nice before sewing and keep your foot running along straight so only that zigzag stitch catches your fabric.

So there you go! Hope that was enlightening! Not sure which foot i am going to tackle next maybe this one? Can anyone guess what it is for?

Meet My Hemmer Feet

Meet Mr Hemmer Foot and Mr Shell Hemmer Foot.

The instructions say to fold over your material twice, not to wide and place the hemmer foot on the top and stitch for a few stitches. With the needle in the fabric raise the foot and curl the folded fabric into the slot, lower the foot and start stitching.

It is a good idea to keep the fabric taut and slightly raise the folded fabric as you sew.
look at that beautiful hemmer out the back! There is no way in the world i could do that with out this foot. Where have you been all my life! (sitting in the drawer at the back of my sewing machine, that's where, can't believe i haven't tried this before)

Here is my hem, pressed and next to the picture in the book. Beautiful! (except for the wonky start). It also has tips on how to do corners. This foot would be perfect for making napkins... mmm... project time!

Now the Shell Hemmer footer, i did not have success with this. The instructions were the same but with different setting, a zig zag instead of a straight stitch.
But i didn't get the over the edge effect in my hem like in the picture. I am going to have another go at this at another date. Any recommendations or helpful tips?
Tomorrow - meet Mr Blind Hemmer Foot!

Meet my Feet!!

Don't worry - i'm not going to gross you out with images of my long monkey toes ( i can pick up pencils and pinch my husband with them!)

Meet My Sewing Machine Feet!

I was given my trusty sewing machine by my Grandmother when she went into a retirement home.

Bernie the Bernina is from the 1960's and she just keeps going and going! There is only one plastic part in the WHOLE machine - gotta love that!

It also has one handy storage thingy and LOTS OF FEET. So i thought it was about time that i tried out these feet and see what they can do...

So over the next week or so i will be posting about different feet. The first post later today will be on my hemming feet ...what this space! :-)
