Sneek Peek - My First Softie

I was sitting at work - bored - and thinking about getting home to play with my puppy and I had a brain wave! I should make a Softie pattern of a Labrador Puppy!

So i went home and enlisted my Mum to do some sketches for me. (Thanks Mum!!)
We used my beautiful Puppy as inspiration, my aim was to have the Softie styled on a Labrador dog, which has certain characteristics, like a dint in between the eyes and nose, and of course the cute floppy ears, that I needed to create.

I had never done anything like this before so it was interesting working out the shapes of the pieces I needed. There was a lot of tweaking and sketching and then I created Prototype One out of felt.

mmm a little bit strange! So i went over it with a marker and did some cosmetic surgery lines to help with my next stage of changes. I need to make it a little slimmer across the back to stop it looking like a pig!
It's legs needed to be a bit wider, nose a bit longer....

Last night i made Prototype Two out of fabric.

It looks a little strange but I am happier with the shape. I have now made a few more alterations and will sew Prototype Three tonight, this time with the sewing machine and seam allowance.

Who knows if i will end up getting it looking nice enough to sel, but it is fun trying!!

I used a few scraps of polar fleece and plaited them to make Bella a toy too to keep here amused while i was sewing, she was looking at my Puppy Softie with hungry eyes!

I would love to know what you think of it? Any suggestions or ideas? What tips do you have for making Softie Patterns?

Wow - good on you! I have never made a prototype before for a softie... it usually is a stab in the dark for me - and the kids end up with the rejects! Can't wait to see how it turns out.
