A New Creation

This is my first try at "Shirring". I was a bit confused at the start coz i though what I wanted to do was "Smocking", but there is a difference.
Wikipedia says - Smocking - "Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch." Shirring - "Shirring is two or more rows of gathers used to decorate parts of garments, usually the sleeves, bodice and yoke."

So that didn't help me much! but i am pretty sure the main difference is that Smocking is hand done and Shirring is machine done, with elastic.
There were a few tutorials out there that helped. One at Altered Cloth, and great one with images at Oz Country Quilting Mum, and a great Video on You Tube.

But pretty much you whack in some Shirring Elastic into you bobbin and start sewing! It is so easy, i made this dress for a lovely little lady I know, I hope she likes it.

I have had absolutely no luck with shirring, it drives me crazy, I can never get that gathered look.
